Net metering makes a comeback for Duke Energy customers in South Carolina as solar advocates, business owners, and Duke utility have agreed to extend equal net metering until the SC legislative session in 2019. At that time, a new net metering policy is intended to be rolled out and take the place of the equal net metering extension. For now, solar customers in Duke territory around the state are able to enjoy favorable rates for their excess power produced by their system and get the monthly benefits from using less energy provided by the electric utility. This collaborative agreement speaks volumes about the ability of SC solar stakeholders and Duke Energy to come together to support what has already been a successful program to date, since it's newest inception in 2015. The future of net metering in 2019 is still unclear, but Sunstore Solar and other advocate groups, politicians, SC businesses and utilities are working on a solution that provides the customer solutions, and maintains their options.
