The concept for the Southern Living Home at Furman University is not a new one. In fact, the plans were first being discussed in 2001, but then 9/11 happened and the plans were put on hold, indefinitely. Flash Forward to the August 2006 Commencement speech by Dr. Shi at Furman University, where he declared the ’06-’07 School Year to be the Year of the Environment. Dr. Shi and Furman made a commitment to become a sustainable university and to uphold the idea of true sustainability throughout the universities practices and teachings. Bringing us into the ’07 school year with the revived discussion of an energy efficient show home for Southern Living magazine on the Furman campus and the commitment of funds from Jim Anthony for the Cliffs Cottage.Further discussion resulted in many partners being brought on including: Johnston Design Group and Triangle Construction.
